Press Release 24th August 2009

A commitment to innovation and regard for the environment is helping Australian Burner Manufacturers (ABM) remain at the forefront of new technology.
Touring the Carrum Downs plant today, Small Business Minister, Joe Helper, said ABM was a great example of a small business making gains despite the global downturn.
“ABM is leading the way in developing technologies that will advance the exciting new industry of ‘Green BioGas’ energy resource recovery,” Mr Helper said.
“The Carrum Downs firm has designed and developed new biogas energy handling equipment that is capable of harvesting biogas or methane as an agribusiness fuel source.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for ABM who have combined green thinking, a skilled workforce and a world-class facility to develop technologies that offer a cleaner future,” he said.
Mr Helper toured the facility while visiting Mordialloc for the Victorian Government’s Community Cabinet today.
He said the former New South Wales company was a privately owned and operated firm that had a 30 year history of manufacturing purpose built industrial combustion equipment across a range sectors.
“ABM is a welcome addition to Victoria’s manufacturing strengths, having relocated from NSW in 2006.
“This dynamic firm chose Victoria as they felt this state provided a more suitable environment for the long term growth prospects of the business.
“It’s great to see the move is paying off, with the firm opening a purpose-built facility last year and now recruiting a further two staff to take their workforce to eight,” he said.
Mr Helper said the Brumby Government was committed to supporting the sustainable development of Victoria’s manufacturing sector.
“We understand the global economic pressures have created uncertainty for small business,” Mr Helper said.
“That is why we are working hard to ensure that SME manufacturers have access to the very best business tools and advice,” he said.
Mr Helper said programs to help SME manufacturers included:
• Small Business Workshop and Seminar Program training from business basics to finance and succession planning;
• A $52 million Skills for Growth Workforce Development Program to assist SME’s develop the skills of their workforce;
• Grow Your Business grants program which has helped nearly 1000 businesses since 2003;
